Windows XP Optimization Tips

Operating system Microsoft Windows XP has left a generation, nearly two generations if at the end of this year's Windows 7 to be circulated. However, from the number of users, the operating system is still a majority. Compared to the Windows 2000 operating system, 98, or 95, Windows XP is the operating system the most longevity. Microsoft also has promised to continue to provide support for XP until April 2014.

If your computer operating system is still mounted, but their performance declined more, there are several steps you can do without having to reformat the hard disk and reinstall. We made the following tips so you can easily do without you need to tamper with the registry. PCplus also not use any software-only update purely and change the settings in the options available. First of all, let's do the update.

Windows Update
Windows Update is a collection of some patches that can prevent malicious programs to destroy or slow down system performance. If the computer is connected to the Internet and Windows says that there are updates, install it all, not just a critical status.

When critical updates are generally more functional for Patching security holes, non-critical updates are important functions to improve performance, compatibility, and features a much improved and definitely safe to install. Windows update process may take some time. Just do it until it is mentioned that there are no more updates are available.

Windows Update requires the following few services enabled in Windows XP:
- Automatic Updates set to Automatic.
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service is set to Manual or Automatic.
If you are still using Service Pack 2, Service Pack 1, or Windows XP without service packs instalasikanlah Service Pack 3. Service Pack 3 is a collection of updates that include all the improvements and updates to previous service packs. Highly recommended for you to optimize your Windows.

Update DirectX
Microsoft DirectX is a set of application programming interfaces (APIs) to handle tasks related to multimedia, especially games and videos on the Microsoft platform. Instead, make sure your operating system already use the latest version of DirectX.

To find out which version you have, please type "dxdiag" in the Start menu> Run and watch the System tab in the DirectX Version. Once known, please point your browser to the Microsoft Download Center at the address www.microsoft.com / downloads.

For your information, since October 2004 until August 2007, Microsoft brings DirectX updates once every two months. After the update is available per quarter. The latest version of DirectX 9 for Windows XP is the version in March 2009.

Update Driver
An update to its drivers that are used by hardware to increase system performance and application compatibility. In addition, the latest drivers are also a number of solutions to solve problems and optimize the system.

Instead, use the driver to the official version released, not beta or pre-release. The reason the beta drivers are still not perfect. To update the driver, please take advantage of the features of Windows Driver Guide. For those of you who use a notebook, we recommend using the latest drivers available on the website concerned notebook manufacturer.

After all the drivers and operating system components using the latest update, the time we do tweaking.

Tweaking Windows XP Tips

Visual Effects
Windows XP default view does look pretty, but actually display the draining system resources and reduce the responsiveness of the computer. Here is an option for Windows XP computers still beautiful but still spry.

Click Start> Settings> Control Panel> System> Advanced. In the Performance section, select Settings. Now, remove the check mark except the following options:
- Show shadows under menus.
- Show shadows under mouse pointer.
- Show translucent selection rectangle.
- Smooth edges of screen fonts.
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop.
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons.
Then select Apply, then click OK. If still not, remove all except the check in the "Use visual styles on windows and buttons". But if you do not need a beautiful and just want a quick, pick the option Adjust for best performance, or delete all the existing check.

ClearType
If you use a good LCD screen LCD monitor or notebook, or plasma, you can get a sharp increase of text with ClearType enabled to use the method of sharpening than regular font or anti-aliasing.
Instruction is through the Start menu> Settings> Control Panel> Display> Appearance then Effects. Give check in "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" and select ClearType.

Page File
Windows XP using the paging file is set by the system. Page file is a backup of RAM memory where the operating system stores data temporarily. In today's operating systems, including Windows, programs and processes applications use virtual memory system is considered as RAM. Only the core of the operating system kernel that uses the physical memory directly. That is, virtual memory or page file is always used, although the memory required by all running processes is much smaller than the main memory (RAM) embedded on the motherboard.

By default, Windows XP will automatically adjust the amount of page file to the following sizes based on the amount of RAM is installed for the system:

Less than 1GB of RAM
- Initial size (MB): 1.5 x amount of RAM available on the system.
- Maximum (MB): 3x the amount of RAM installed. The operating system has a 32-bit limit of 4GB maximum file page.
1GB RAM or more
- Initial size (MB): 1x the amount of RAM available on the system.
- Maximum (MB): 3x the amount of RAM installed. The operating system has a 32-bit limit of 4GB maximum file page.
Page file will not grow if you set its initial size to a size sufficient. Using the automatic option for the page file also will avoid or minimize the appearance of an error message "Out of Memory" when running many applications or opening a lot of data.

Provide initial size is too big nor negative impact on the system except waste disk space when not in use, and has nothing to do with performance. Then, how to know whether the RAM is enough or not?

Way, use the computer to move for several hours without a restart. After that look in Task Manager, particularly in the Performance tab. If the Commit Charge - Peak Physical greater than Memory - Total, then your system requires additional RAM. But if you use the option of magnitude page file created automatically by the system, then Windows XP will automatically increase the page file to you.

The next problem that arises is, the maximum size of page file on the operating system 32-bit is 4GB. What if still less well? If you have more than one hard disk or partition on the computer, make it a second page file on your hard disk. Windows uses an internal algorithm to determine which page file is used to manage virtual memory optimally.

According to Microsoft, the optimal solution is to create a page file that is stored in the main partition and create a system page file again on another partition on your hard disk or partition that is rarely used.

Disable Indexing Service
Indexing Service in Windows XP to index of your files to shorten the time when you do a search on the hard disk. For example, when you want to open a specific file or search for a phrase in a document file. However, indexing continuously to a file on your hard disk performance would be lower because the system uses the page file in large numbers and also consume processor resources.

To disable Indexing Service, open My Computer, then right click on the entire hard disk or partition that does not want to index again. Next, click Properties and then remove the check on "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" and click Apply. Then select "Apply changes to the sub folders and files". If there are files that can not be updated, select only "Ignore All".

Raise the Mouse Pointer Speed
By default, Windows set the speed of the mouse pointer on the average velocity. Although enough, sometimes it can slow down time when we need to move the cursor to different areas of the screen. Increasing the pointer speed will allow you to more quickly clack-click on the computer more efficiently without the need to move your hands a lot.

How to do this, click Start> Settings> Control Panel> Mouse. On the Pointer Options tab, in the Motion, drag the slider 1 to 5 steps toward the option "Fast". Then check settings on the "Enhance pointer precision" and click OK. It should, now you can move the mouse pointer without a lot of physical moving your mouse.

There is no definite setting for this option. Since you are using a computer, the speed of movement of the mouse pointer is not necessarily in accordance with the settings used by other people. A clear, common mouse cheap or worn mouse has a limited level of responsiveness. If raising the speed of the mouse pointer is not much effect, it's time to replace the mouse.

Startup Menu
The options available on the Startup menu (Start> Run> msconfig) is an application that will run every time you turn on the computer and into the operating system. More and more check there, it will be the slower your computer works because the entire program is run, either directly or walking in the background.

We recommend that you remove all the existing check, except for security software such as antivirus, antispyware, firewall, etc. as well as applications that are frequently used, such as instant messenger software or printer driver.
In addition to improving the speed of the boot, clean check in the Startup menu will also improve system performance significantly. After all, if there are deleted and it centangnya you need, you can give back to check the desired option.

If your computer is more than one user account, you can also set what applications run on user startup different. The trick is to select the User and the account you want to edit. But of course you need administrator rights to be able to do this.

Disk Defragmenter
After so long in use, and create or move data to a computer, the management of data placement on the hard disk in your system will fall apart. As a result, the hard disk will work harder to read and write data to the system. To tidy it up, the Windows Disk Defragmenter already have enough to do the job.

How to use a double-click on My Computer, then right click on the drive or partition you want to defrag. For example, after right-click on drive C:, click Properties> Tools, then select Defragement Now and Defragment. Another way is from the Start menu> Run, type "dfrg.msc", then press Enter. Select the drive you want to defrag, then click Defragment.

Since Disk Defragmenter is very hungry for input-output operations on the system, then chances are you'll fuss if you do defragmenting while working. Should do defrag when your computer will leave in a long time, eg night before you go to bed.

Now, if this way was still slow, too, look at the specifications of your computer again. Is it meet the needs of the Windows XP operating system? Maybe not. If it is enough to meet and the steps above are not much help, please use another way. For example using tweaking software or format and reinstall.
